What do good candidates do in the speaking tests?

- listen carefully to the tasks and to your partner

- listen and also react to what your partner has said to keep the conversation going

- show interest in what your partner says

- ask questions; answer your partner´s/the examiner´s questions

- interact with your partner and/or the examiner throughout the exam

- move the conversation forward (develop the discussion)

- take control together and keep the conversation going

- come to a conclusion of some sort

- use eye contact in a good conversation

- use body language to encourage your partner

- the communication should be interactive

- be resourceful in your use of language

- show an ability to extend when it is possible

- don´t get stuck, paraphrase if the word does not come (don´t spend time struggling)

- find a way of expressing yourself

- balance fluency and accuracy

- monitor what you say as well, be accurate

- put preparation into good use; study before the exam

- be able to overcome nerves (this can influence your performance)

- practise sufficiently before the exam using a stopwatch (so that you have a feeling for how long a minute is:)

- make sure you can maintain your flow long enough (e.g. be able to speak for 2 minutes non-stop) so that you don´t stop too early

- probably the more prepared you are, the more relaxed you are

- make sure you know the format of the test (types of tasks)

- don´t be put off when the examiner interrupts you because of the timing

- preparation is KEY
